हाइलाइट

  • The Young People’s Performing Arts Ensemble (YPPAE) is presenting its 19th edition of the beloved local crosstalk series, Roaring Good Times 19.
  • This homegrown brand, established in 2008, specializes in original Mandarin crosstalk (相声) that reflects the everyday life and culture of Singapore through humor and wit.

सार

Crosstalks:

1) “Speak Mandarin Properly” 好好说话 explores the comedic struggle between using Standard Mandarin and the "local" version heavily influenced by dialects and Singlish. The humour often stems from the awkwardness of trying to speak "properly" while naturally wanting to revert to familiar local phrasing

2) Crosstalk “Chope Culture” 臭屁文化

Uniquely Singaporean habit of "chopping" (reserving) seats at hawker centres using tissue packets, umbrellas, or even employee passes. It highlights the everyday "battle" for space and the unspoken rules of etiquette in crowded public places.

3) What's That Acronym, 缩写人生

Singapore is famous for its love of acronyms (LTA, CPF, BTO, etc.). This crosstalk explores how a life governed by abbreviations can lead to disastrous misunderstandings or a complete loss of meaning if someone isn't "in the loop." It reflects the fast-paced, efficiency-driven nature of local life.

4) Wu Song and The Tiger 武松打虎

"old-school" way of storytelling with modern, flashy entertainment styles to see which resonates more with today’s audience.

5) Sing Singapore 歌唱比赛

This crosstalk touches on the lack of original Singaporean children's songs. It humorously portrays a child in a singing competition who, having few options, ends up singing National Day songs like Stand Up for Singapore or Mari Kita because those are the only local songs they know by heart.

6) Counting Frogs 数青蛙

Helping kids learning the multiplication table using the Chinese tongue twister 数青蛙 Counting Frogs?

7) Heads Down, Phones Up 低头族
