Synopsis
DAMARU BHAJEY X marks a defining milestone in Damaru Singapore’s journey—ten years of building, questioning, and reimagining Indian percussion. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the concert bridges ancient drumming traditions with Singapore’s future leaders and launches a ten-year roadmap toward a distinct Singaporean Indian Drumming Identity. This concert is not just a retrospective. It is a declaration of intent.
The concert will showcase the organization’s various Indian drumming ensembles, such as the Parai Aatam and Nasik Dhol Tasha, original songs from the upcoming album “Damaru Bhajey X”, a highlight of the students from their academy and a celebration of its journey through montages, prize giving and speeches.
At the heart of Damaru Bhajey X is Damaru’s long-term commitment to the people and the art form. The concert celebrates a decade of achievements, investment in development, and access—particularly for people of various ages, gender and cultural backgrounds who might otherwise be excluded from participation. It celebrates its growth from a humble team to its current strength of passionate members; students, emerging artists, and practitioners shaped through Damaru’s educational and outreach initiatives.
Damaru Bhajey X marks the launch of Damaru’s next phase of growth. Following six years of sustained study and practice in the Parai art form, Damaru introduces Paramparai, the first edition of its Parai curriculum, establishing a formal framework for training and knowledge transmission. The concert also launches Singa Idi, a community initiative aimed at expanding access to Indian drumming and embedding rhythmic practice within the wider community.
Anchored by a public concert, the project is complemented by a two-day hands-on workshop and a subsequent community outreach program titled Singa Idi, designed to deepen community engagement beyond the performance. The project brings together the general public, collaborating partners, professional musicians, and students in a shared space for learning, creative exchange, and cultural celebration. With key collaborators: Nadi Singapura and Drum Feng, the programme fosters cross-cultural dialogue, strengthening social bonds through rhythm, movement, and collective experience.
In a rapidly evolving cultural landscape, Damaru Bhajey X asserts that tradition and innovation are not opposites. They are partners. Rhythm becomes a unifying force—connecting generations, communities, and cultures—while positioning Singapore not only as a place where heritage survives, but where it evolves with confidence.
